High rise in spam emails circulating - 8/9/2010
With our latest article, we cover some important issues relating to the high rise in Spam Emails and Email Phising.

Spam Emails:

From a technical point of view, there is only so much an Administrator can do on the server end to prevent, or atleast decrease the amount of spam getting through to your inbox before risking ligitimate emails being rejected along with the spam. This is an ongoing battle for Administrators as new techniques are being devised by spammers in order to bypass the spam filters.

Some questions you may ask:
Where do they get my email address from?

Dictionary Attacks - Spammers use software to randomlly generate common popular email addresses(such as "info", "bookings")
Aquiring third party lists - Spammers aquire your address from third parties, such as websites you might register on.
Harvasting - Spammers use custom software that scan web pages for email addresses and extract into a custom file they then use.

Some spam emails seem to come from a trusted source, sometimes my own email!

This is called "Spoofing". The spammers use custom software to send out the emails. Having control over this, they develop custom tools where they can specify a fake "senders" address, usually being a trusted source, or in most cases using your email address as to appear that the email came from yourself.
